UFOS: THE SPIRITUAL-PSYCHIC CONNECTION 

UFOs and Spiritualism have commonalities that scientists almost universally ignore: entities with ephemeral presences give messages, and paranormal physical phenomena are reported. Mediums have reported contact with extraterrestrials for more than 100 years; 70 years ago, U.S. military UFO investigators took an interest in Spiritualist mediums that continues today.  

No accredited university departments are devoted to the topics of UFOlogy or Spiritualism, yet popular interest is high. Liminality and anti-structure are anthropological concepts derived from analyses of myth and ritual that help explain common characteristics of Spiritualism and UFOs. One characteristic is UFO experiences and psychic experience. The various relationships between UFOs, spiritualism, and psychic phenomena will be discussed.  

Bio: George P. Hansen worked in parapsychology laboratories for eight years, three at the Rhine Research Center in Durham, North Carolina, and five at Psychophysical Research Laboratories in Princeton, New Jersey. His papers in scientific journals cover mathematical statistics, fraud and deception, the skeptical movement, conjurors in parapsychology, and exposés of hoaxes. He is a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and author of The Trickster and the Paranormal.   

Charles Emmons has a master’s degree in Anthropology from the University of Illinois and a doctorate in Sociology from the University of Illinois, Chicago. He is Professor of Sociology at Gettysburg College and is a paranormal researcher. His latest book is Science and Spirit: Exploring the Limits of Consciousness. He is active in the interdisciplinary network, Exploring the Extraordinary; is an honorary member of the board of reviewers of the journal Paranthropology; and is a member of The Society for Scientific Exploration.
