About the Event
The RTPI will lead a series of lessons and activities centered on Lily Dale’s “Ecosystem”. Participants will learn about the various habitats that comprise the grounds and the species that reside in them. Special attention will also be given to how people affect and are affected by the dale’s “nature”. Students will keep field journals, learn how to use Peterson field guides to identify plants and animals, conduct biological surveys and scientific experiments, play games, and create arts and crafts. Below is a list of needed supplies and a schedule outlining the major theme/focus for each day.
Monday:
A general introduction to the ecology of Lily Dale.
Set the theme for exploring the places various organisms call home.
Environmental Issues- Trash and Invasive Species.
Tuesday:
An introduction to the Cassadaga Lakes (on the lakeshore).
Ecology- Vertebrates & Aquatic vegetation
Wednesday:
Forest (in the woodlot)
Ecology- Trees, Birds & Insects
Thursday:
Meadows/gardens (open, vegetated areas)
Ecology- Flowers and other herbaceous
plants, Butterflies and other pollinators.
Friday:
Lily Dale-wide Bio-blitz to tie to the habitats together. All day.
